centrifugal fan

A centrifugal fan is a mechanical device used to move air or gas by means of centrifugal force. It is widely applied in ventilation, air-conditioning, industrial processes, dust collection, and combustion air supply. The fan typically consists of a rotating impeller enclosed in a scroll-shaped housing. As the impeller spins, air enters near the center, or eye, of the impeller and is pushed outward along the blades to the outer edge by centrifugal force. This action converts mechanical energy from the motor into increased air pressure and velocity.The main components include the impeller, housing (also called the volute or scroll), inlet and outlet ducts, drive system, and support structure. Impellers may use forward-curved, backward-curved, or radial blades, each with distinct performance characteristics. Forward-curved blades produce high airflow at low to medium pressure and are often used in HVAC systems. Backward-curved blades offer higher efficiency, better energy savings, and are suitable for higher pressure applications. Radial blades are robust and resist wear and clogging, making them appropriate for handling dust-laden or particle-rich air.Centrifugal fans are known for stable performance over a wide range of operating conditions. Their pressure–flow relationship allows them to maintain relatively constant airflow even when system resistance changes. This makes them suitable for complex duct networks and processes where conditions vary. In addition, they can generate higher static pressures compared with axial fans of similar size, enabling them to overcome resistance in filters, heat exchangers, and long duct runs.Noise control and efficiency are important design considerations. Proper selection of blade type, rotational speed, and housing geometry can reduce turbulence and aerodynamic noise. In many installations, silencers, vibration isolators, and flexible connections are added to further minimize noise and vibration. Energy efficiency is enhanced through optimized impeller design, smooth airflow paths, and the use of high-efficiency motors and variable frequency drives. Variable speed control allows the fan to match output to real-time system demand, reducing power consumption and operating costs.Centrifugal fans can be constructed from various materials depending on the application. Carbon steel and stainless steel are common in industrial environments, while aluminum and reinforced plastics may be used where corrosion resistance or weight reduction is important. For explosive or hazardous atmospheres, special designs with appropriate materials, grounding, and certification are required.Maintenance typically involves regular inspection, cleaning of the impeller and housing, lubrication of bearings, and alignment checks for belt-driven units. With correct selection, installation, and maintenance, a centrifugal fan provides reliable, long-term service in many critical air-moving applications.
