Fire Stairwell Pressurization Damper

A fire stairwell pressurization damper is a key component in a building’s smoke control and life safety system. It is installed in the ducts that supply pressurized air to stairwells during a fire emergency. The primary purpose of this device is to help maintain a higher air pressure inside the stairwell compared with adjacent spaces, preventing smoke from entering escape routes and allowing occupants and firefighters to use the stairs safely. In normal conditions, the damper typically remains closed or in a standby position, allowing for regular ventilation patterns or remaining sealed depending on the system design. When a fire alarm or smoke detection system is activated, a signal is sent to the pressurization fan and dampers. The fan starts delivering fresh air to the stairwell, and the pressurization damper modulates its position to maintain a predetermined pressure level and airflow rate.Control of pressure is critical. If the pressure inside the stairwell is too low, smoke can infiltrate through door gaps, compromising visibility and breathing conditions. If the pressure is too high, it can make stair doors difficult to open, creating an obstruction to evacuation and access for emergency personnel. For this reason, the damper is often equipped with actuators, position sensors, and pressure control systems that allow continuous adjustment based on real-time measurements.Fire stairwell pressurization dampers are designed and tested to withstand elevated temperatures and fire exposure, in line with relevant building codes and standards. They are usually constructed from robust, non-combustible materials such as galvanized or stainless steel, and may include thermal insulation and fire-resistant seals around the blades and frame. The blades must close reliably when required for fire compartmentation in other applications, but in stair pressurization systems they are primarily used to regulate airflow and maintain system integrity under fire conditions.Integration with the building management system or fire alarm control unit is also essential. The damper status – open, closed, or modulating – is monitored so facility staff and firefighters know that the stair pressurization system is operating as intended. Periodic testing and maintenance, including functional checks of actuator response, pressure levels in the stairwell, and inspection of mechanical components, are necessary to ensure long-term reliability.By controlling airflow and pressure in stairwells, a fire stairwell pressurization damper helps create a smoke-free vertical escape path. This supports safe evacuation, improves conditions for rescue and firefighting operations, and contributes significantly to overall building fire safety and code compliance.

The Pressurization Air Supply Vent is a fire protection component dedicated to building mechanical pressurization smoke prevention systems, designed to supply fresh air into critical evacuation zones — including fire stairwells, lobby ante-rooms, combined ante-rooms, and refuge floors — to maintain a positive air pressure differential that physically blocks smoke from entering these spaces during a fire event. Normally closed in daily operation to minimize air leakage and reduce HVAC energy loss, the Pressurization Air Supply Vent opens automatically upon receiving a DC24V fire alarm linkage signal or can be manually activated on-site, simultaneously triggering the pressurization fan to deliver a continuous fresh air supply into the protected zone. The maintained pressure differential — 40 to 50 Pa in stairwells and 25 to 30 Pa in ante-rooms per national standard — creates an air barrier that prevents smoke from migrating from fire zones into evacuation pathways, protecting building occupants during evacuation and maintaining clear access for firefighting operations. A built-in 280°C fusible alloy element provides automatic closure if supply duct temperatures reach the fire threshold, preventing flames from spreading through the supply ductwork. Available in normally closed and self-gravity louver configurations to suit ante-room and stairwell applications respectively, the DC24V Smoke Prevention Supply Vent is manufactured from cold-rolled steel and stainless steel in compliance with national fire protection standards and is widely specified for high-rise residential towers, commercial buildings, hospitals, underground facilities, and public assembly buildings across Southeast Asia and global markets.
