HVAC Duct Fire Protection Damper
An HVAC duct fire protection damper is a crucial safety device installed in heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning ductwork to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through a building. During normal operation, air flows freely through the damper. When a fire occurs, the damper is designed to close automatically, creating a barrier inside the duct that helps maintain the integrity of fire-rated walls, floors, and partitions.Typically, the damper is installed where ductwork passes through a fire-rated assembly. It is equipped with a fusible link or an electric or pneumatic actuator connected to a fire detection or building management system. The fusible link is designed to melt at a specific temperature, usually around 70–74°C, releasing the damper blades so they can close. Motorized versions receive a signal from a smoke detector or fire alarm panel, causing the actuator to drive the blades into the closed position. Once closed, the blades block the passage of flame, high heat, and in some designs, smoke. To function effectively, the damper assembly must be properly sized and matched to the duct system’s air velocity and pressure conditions. The frame, blades, and other components are generally made of galvanized or stainless steel and tested to recognized international standards for fire resistance and leakage performance. Ratings typically specify the duration for which the damper can withstand fire exposure, such as 60, 90, or 120 minutes, while maintaining structural stability and limiting temperature transfer.Correct installation is essential for reliable performance. The damper must be anchored to the fire-rated barrier using approved sleeves, mounting angles, and fire-stopping materials. Clearances between the damper and the duct or wall must follow the tested assembly details. Access doors are usually provided so that blades, links, and actuators can be inspected and maintained. Improper installation, such as misalignment or missing fire sealants, can significantly reduce the damper’s ability to resist fire spread.Ongoing inspection and maintenance are also key. Building operators should periodically verify that blades move freely, that fusible links or actuators are intact, and that there is no obstruction or corrosion. Functional testing is often required by local codes at regular intervals to ensure that dampers respond correctly to temperature rise or alarm signals.By closing off duct openings during a fire, HVAC duct fire protection dampers help confine flames and hot gases to the area of origin, support safe evacuation, and reduce damage to the building structure. When properly designed, installed, and maintained, they form an integral part of a comprehensive passive and active fire protection strategy in modern buildings.

The Fire Rated Ventilation Damper is a core fire protection component installed in HVAC duct systems to prevent the spread of fire, flames, and smoke across building fire compartments. Normally open in daily operation, it closes automatically when the surrounding air temperature reaches the set threshold — 70°C for standard ventilation and air conditioning systems, 150°C for kitchen exhaust applications, and 280°C for smoke exhaust systems — using a thermal fusible link or memory alloy sensor to trigger the blade closure mechanism. The Fire Rated Ventilation Damper supports electric actuator control for integration with the building fire alarm system, manual override operation, and signal feedback output to the fire control room. Manufactured from galvanized steel or stainless steel with high-temperature sealing components, it is compliant with GB 15930-2024 national fire protection standards and is widely applied in commercial buildings, office towers, hotels, hospitals, industrial facilities, and residential high-rise projects across Southeast Asia and global markets.
